Researching Your Norwegian Ancestors Norway is a Scandinavian country and is famous (among genealogists!) for keeping good records and protecting them from destruction. As is the case with many European countries, you need to pin-point as closely as you can where your ancestors lived when there. Records are kept at the local level, with juridiction at the clerical disrtict and parish level. |

First, bookmark or print out the FHL Norway Research Outline. and a map of Norway (the map prints out better than it looks on screen) You will also want to familiarize yourself with the Norway Historical Background If you don't know Norwegian, you will definitely want to bookmark or print out th Norewegian Genealogical Word List (no pdf is up. If you print it, click the "next document" at the bottom of the page to get the whole thing) See what the Family History Library has for Norway. Click the view related places button in the upper corner to see the geographical breakdowns, which consist of 18 counties and two cities. Once you select the county or city you want to search, again click "view related places" to see the records for the towns and villages of that county. Remember: you will search for records at the national level and county level and local level. If you can travel to Madison, Wisconisn, The Norwegian- American Genealogical Center & Naeseth Library has an exceptionally strong collection for the researcher with Norwegian roots. They will also do reserch (for a fee) by mail. The Norwegian American Historical Association will respond to limited research requests and maintains an archives and has made a number of resources available online, one of which is a mechanism to search their archives holdings online.
